In the Throes of Time

The calendar buzzed
Around my ears
And the pendulum of our lobby-clock
Swung before me throughout
Is it a Sunday?
Or a Monday?
What is the date?
The time?
The iron fetters have not rusted
For aren’t we
Forever polishing them
The moon has been eclipsed wholly
The dreamy road has tumbled
Into a thicket
But the groping has not begun
As yet
The clouds have passed by
Leaving behind,
Deep chasms
My heart leaps and bounces
To fill these hollows
And now
When they are filled
And satiated
My heart is
Void and empty

Sukrita Paul Kumar

Painting in words
— Aditi Sharma
Dreams form the effervescence of Sukrita Paul Kumar’s life, guiding, shaping and compelling her to paint her dreams with a pen, giving them the form of a poem. In her collection “Dreamcatcher”, the seasoned poet presents her tryst with dreams and colours. Her flair for fluidity with words was evident during a book reading session at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts recently.

Through an evocative play of words her poems become a means to discover oneself. Referring them to be more powerful than her paintings, Sukrita remarked, “Those of you have experienced poetry, or are writing poetry might know that there is oneself within a self. It meanders. And you stand outside, watching it, steering your way going in directions unknown.”

Sukrita’s words flow in an affable and comfortable rhythm juxtaposed with uncertain lengths making it her way of reaching the blissful core and moving out the very next moment.

The poet who likes the idea of stillness finds poetry giving her a sense of meditation. Like the title of the collection, the poems between the covers augment a dreamcatcher’s mesh embellished with feathers and beads, bringing its keeper good dreams. For instance, she finds hope in catastrophic times.

A poem from tsunami snapshot titled “Insight” speaks about calmness among restlessness.

In the centre a wet circle of light rising slowly over the river of experience, panting and huffing,

lies the truth of my life So white! I cannot see it All colours merged, Lights absorbed. The white becomes whiter and I more blind. Speaking on the concept of tsunami snapshots, the poet recollects her wish to play an active part in helping the victims, which she couldn’t. The newspapers ran stories of people stranded and hit by the tragedy. It is then she sought to translate their plight through poetry. “These are different images that I gathered, and these images come out as a story of tsunami,” she points out.

Delving on her experience of dealing with homeless people, she recalls the essence of happiness with which they live. It is not they who are devoid of imagination, but us, the middle-class and the upper-middle class.

Sukrita reflects on how our minds have become manipulative “We starve for moments of pure happiness and innocence of a certain kind. I like seeing people keeping the child in them unharmed.” she signs off.

Painting Sunrise

Coal blackness mingling
with clear Prussian blue
carving depth around
the border
between the earth and the sky
the horizon

Slabs,
one resting over the other

Silent rhythmic knocking

The wall crumbling
As the folds of colourful skirts
emerge, following
a long dancing foot

peeping through cracks and creeks

A thousand
dark arms
embrace the rising
bright colours

Guru

Trees are yogis
Standing erect on their roots
Exuding an aura
Of unrelatedness

Each one is
One and content

Swinging proudly in
The silent music of the gentle breeze
Meditating into a state of thoughtlessness
And blowing its spiritual breath
Into every little leaf on its being

At noon it throws its cool shadow
For the earth to rest in peace

The yogi does not participate
In his glory

The tropical summer cannot
comprehend
Its glorious freshness

The tree shoots upwards
in an aimless search
Its height giving it a vital
Security in the soil
The distant exuberance of
The sun is dimmed by the yogi
I have one in my compound
I inhale its philosophy power and light
For my own
Roots branches and leaves

Where Shall I Write

Where shall I write
the paper twists in pain
all space is in awkward crinkles

Where shall I paint
The canvas fills
with sighs and whispers
As I lift those brushes

I carry the cross
nailed by
Unborn poems, aborted paintings
Neither living
Nor dead

Of Creative Anxieties

In the process of writing,
I am ahead of myself always
And there’s no looking back

The rest of the time
I am stalking myself
And there’s no looking ahead

The issue is
That of keeping pace...

Mountain Nights

I didn’t know then
What I know now

The big thud on the roof
That cracked the rocky silence
Of sleep day after day
Was that of a flying fox
with wings that do not
carry its weight into the firmament
Nor combat the mountain fog

Huddled out of dreams
I’d topple into the black tunnel
of night all alone
not in glory of the
moonlit snow
but in anguish of the lingering din
of sleepless nights

Treacherous journey uphill
difficult to climb
more difficult to come down...

The Hazara Poem

Marking an end
to the long night of oblivion,
the dream of freedom is now visible
perhaps a silhouette of promise
A dream yet to be dreamt

The arrow of light
Rises from the white hole
At the end of the tunnel
Splitting the darkness into
10,000 screams of Hazara captives
Sold as slaves in 1893

Birthing and dying sounds
incubating and gestating
babies born in anguish
and the emerging poems
paving the way
to dreaming
the dreams of homing ...

The Myth of Re-creation

The white of the bark
Is the frozen heart of the white
Turned white when Columbus landed on the shores
of what he thought, the land of spices

The deepening red of the leaves every fall thence
Is not the sudden blushing of the damsel
It is the blood of the Indians rising from
The womb of the earth below
Forever pregnant
with the lava of unrecorded genocide
Streams of leaves dropping as tears

Every inch savagely cultivated
Beauty a metaphor of atrocity
Moments of joy
Pumped from lungs on ventilators
Men and women in love
their hearts beating on pacemakers

Staking their riches at our casinos
They will lose
So said the Chief each year
We’ll get our land back
With their money,
Let the season pass.
