Madamji,
Can you get me
My mai?

My home.

Slapping the dust off himself
The little boy
queried, his eyes rolling in hope,

Through long barbed moments
between us
he stared
into my vacant face
filling me
fiercely
with motherhood.


  मैडम जी,
  क्या आप दिला दोगे
  मेरी माई,
  मेरा घर!
  गर्द झाड़ के
  आंखों में उम्मीद घुमा के
  पूछा छोटे छोकरे ने।

  कांटे-दार लम्हों के पार से
  उसने मेरे कोरे चेहरे को घूर के देखा
  मेरे अन्दर ममता का
  सैलाब उमड़ आया।

When damp blankets and
leaking roofs
provide
shelter to the homeless

Wealthy sinners
Sleep in greater comfort


  सीले कम्बल,
  और टपकती छत
  बे-घरों को पनाह देती है
  वसीलों वाले, नसीब की नींद सो रहे हैं।

Not scared of
Living homeless,

The sick man
Lay terrified
of
Dying without a home.


  बिना घर जीने से डरता नहीं था वो
  बिन घर मरने का बीमार को डर है।

We the homeless / बेघर हम - ४

The sun shines
On his yellow shirt

And butterflies fly out
of his eyes

till he opens his heart
to show the reptiles
gnawing
at his insides


  ज़र्द रंग क़मीज़ पे उसकी
  धूप टपकती है
  और आंखों से तितलियां उड़ती हैं
  जब तक दिल को खोल के वो दिखलाता नहीं
  अन्दर ही अन्दर उसको, कुतरते, रेंगते कीड़े।

We the homeless / बेघर हम - ५

Said the rickshaw-puller, the one
with the gaping wound
on his calf:
“No, no need for the doctor.
This happens so many times, madamji,
And Allah heals it very fast”

With feline alacrity
My hand moved to cover
my bandaged finger
marking my faithlessness.


  रिक्शे वाले की पिंडली का ज़ख़्म खुला था – बोला :
  ‘नहीं, नहीं, मैडमजी इसमें
  डॉक्टर वाक्टर क्या करना है!
  अक्सर होता है
  अल्लाह है ना - सारे ज़ख़्म ही भर देता है!

  फुरती से मैंने
  पट्टी बंधी अपनी उंगली को छुपा लिया, और अपनी कम-ईमानी को भी।
